Cuban Catholic - Information for the Cuban Catholic

The Cuban Catholic Church in Cuba is currently organized into three Archdioceses and eight Dioceses as follows. Further, there are Parishes and other religious communities within each of those individual Catholic Dioceses. The Cuban Catholic Church has a basic web site listing names and addresses for religious orders currently public in Cuba.

Cuba President Castro expressed condolences for the death of Pope John Paul II and declared three days of official mourning on the island beginning Sunday. Castro called the Pope's passing "sad news'' and expressed "heartfelt condolences of the Cuban people and the government.'' His Holiness John Paul II was in favor of peace, justice and solidarity among all people. The Cuban leader spoke of the Pope's historic January 1998 visit to Cuba as an important time between the Vatican and Cuba.''

Cuba became officially atheist after the revolution, but the government removed all reference to atheism from in the constitution more than ten years ago. The government then began to allow Cuban believers to join the Communist Party. Relations between Cuba Catholics and other churches and the Cuban state blossomed in January 1998 with John Paul's visit.

Several Cuban citizens traveled to Rome to attend the Pope's funeral and to participate in the conclave of Cardinals that elected John Paul's successor. The Cuban government sent a high-level delegation to the Pope's funeral. The Cuban flag was flown at half-staff on public buildings and military installations for three days and baseball games were suspended. A book of condolences for John Paul was opened for signing by Cuban Catholics.

Over the years since the day of the revolution, Cuban Catholics have endured a deliberate and pervasive de-Christianization campaign sponsored and carried out by the Cuban government. Almost since the day of the Revolution, the Castro government adopted a militantly atheist stance to eliminate any religious competition with their own influence. Cuban Catholics have been at the front to observe Castro's own tablet of ideology. Believers of all faiths, including Cuban Catholics have been jailed, executed, defrocked, and exiled. Recently cornered by a resurgence in Catholics, the Castro government is re-recognizing the Catholic Church since the '80s. Restrictions on certain Church activities were eased, facilitating a reorganization of Catholic Church structures.
